Ronnie Landfield Biography
Ronnie Landfield, born on January 9, 1947, in The Bronx, New York, is a distinguished American abstract painter whose career spans over five decades. His early life in Pelham Parkway, Bronx, was marked by a profound engagement with art, beginning with his first exhibition in Manhattan in 1962. Landfield's educational journey took him through several prestigious institutions, including the High School of Art and Design, the Kansas City Art Institute, the San Francisco Art Institute, and the Art Students League of New York. Despite the brief periods of study at these institutions, it was his relentless pursuit of artistic expression and his immersion in the vibrant New York art scene of the early 1960s that truly shaped his career.
Landfield's early career was characterized by experimentation with various styles and mediums. After a devastating fire in his Broadway loft in 1966, he returned to painting, sharing a space with his friend Dan Christensen. This period saw the creation of the "Border Painting" series, marking a significant phase in his artistic development. His work from this era was associated with Lyrical Abstraction, a movement that encompassed Color Field painting and Abstract Expressionism. Landfield was represented by notable galleries such as the David Whitney Gallery and the André Emmerich Gallery, establishing himself as a significant figure in the contemporary art world.
Throughout the 1970s and into the early 1990s, Landfield's major paintings found their way into important public collections, including the Norton Simon Museum, the Walker Art Center, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. His engagement with the art community extended beyond painting, as he began extensive writing and lecturing on abstract painting, contributing to a deeper understanding of the movement.
Landfield's work has been celebrated in more than seventy solo exhibitions and over two hundred group exhibitions worldwide. His paintings have been showcased in prestigious venues such as the Butler Institute of American Art, where he had a retrospective exhibition exploring five decades of his work, and his participation in the first Whitney Biennial, among other significant exhibitions. His contributions to the art world have been recognized with awards from the William and Norma Copley Foundation and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation.
Landfield's artistic philosophy is deeply rooted in the modernist tradition of the 20th century, drawing inspiration from nature and expressing spirituality and emotion through color. His work is a testament to his belief in the power of abstract painting to convey the mystery of the spirit and the awe-inspiring beauty of the universe. Landfield's admiration for Chinese Landscape painting has also been a significant influence, informing his approach to combining various painting styles and techniques.
Today, Ronnie Landfield continues to live and work in TriBeCa, New York, and teaches at The Art Students League of New York. His legacy as an artist is not only defined by his vibrant and emotive paintings but also by his dedication to educating future generations of artists. Landfield's work remains a vital part of the conversation on abstract painting, embodying the spirit of innovation and the relentless pursuit of artistic expression.
